NZ Business Lending Trends: What Q2 2026 Tells Us About How Kiwi SMEs Are Funding Growth

At Bizzy, we see the demand for SME business lending in New Zealand every day. Every funding request that comes through our platform, from a $30k cashflow buffer to a $2.5M acquisition, tells us something about where Kiwi businesses actually stand right now.

Last quarter (April to June 2026), we saw a record number of businesses exploring their funding options. What surprised us was that in sectors where lending is often framed as high risk, we still saw multiple deals get funded, making a real impact on Kiwi businesses.

Alongside that, a growing number of business owners weren't just covering gaps, they were actively positioning for growth: buying businesses, purchasing equipment, and backing themselves to expand.

Here's what our data from the last quarter shows about NZ business lending demand, and a look at some of the real businesses who secured funding through Bizzy along the way.

Business Lending Trends - April to June 26

Throughout the year and especially this quarter, we've seen lending request amounts rise - we've seen everything from 30k to 2.5M requested via Bizzy! Looking at those requests shows us there are plenty of business owners in growth mode, most notably positioning for business acquisitions and major asset purchases.

Covering cashflow remained one of the top reasons NZ businesses were looking for funding throughout the last 3 months, but context matters - even for those requests, we often see it's because a new contract just landed, or the revenue is coming in, just not before all the expenses of running the business are due. It's about bridging the gap.

Although the current narrative in the business landscape is that construction and trades are high risk and hard to get lending for right now a good amount of the successful requests last quarter were in the construction and trades space including:

  • 30K for a short term loan to cover everyday

  • 35K for a new ute, hire apprentices and keep cashflow steady

  • 20K for a buffer to enable purchases of material while awaiting for clients to pay

The additional risk for construction may be factored into the price from lenders, but the need and possible paths are certainly there.

Otherwise we also saw a lot of professional services coming through for funding as well - making up 24% of our funding requests in June.

Businesses Who Secured Finance via Bizzy

Aside from the numbers, we love seeing the real world impact of the funding business owners got via Bizzy from our panel of 17+ lenders.

Over the last 3 months we’ve seen requests come from a range of industries with the majority in construction and trades, but others in manufacturing, transportation, professional services, retail and more.

Within these we’re seeing a majority of businesses requesting to bridge a short-term gap and help with everyday cashflow, while others are looking to acquire a new business, or purchase assets or equipment to streamline operations or grow their business.

A few of the deals we helped fund this quarter include:

A business acquisition as part of a wider M&A strategy for an IT services company. They received 5 quotes, and secured 100K of funding.

A construction business buying a great deal on a company vehicle, keeping cash flow steady and helping them hire new apprentices. They received 6 quotes from our panel and secured 35K of funding.

An infrastructure business purchasing new equipment to be more green and power-efficient - saving the business over $1k/month. This business received 5 quotes from our lending panel and secured 30K of funding.

A trades business purchasing new equipment that allowed them to speed up jobs from 2 days to just 4 hours. They received 4 quotes and 70K funding for equipment.
